Jacqueline’s Fine Jewelry wants you to know that cleaning your jewelry has never taken on more importance than now, during the Coronavirus outbreak.
To prevent damage and maintain the value of your jewelry, Jacqueline’s Fine Jewelry in both Morgantown and Uniontown have the following recommendations for correctly cleaning your precious pieces.
How To Clean Silver.
Use a soft non-abrasive polishing cloth or soft sponge. Jacqueline’s Fine Jewelry recommends the Connoisseurs UltraSoft Silver Jewelry Polishing Cloth.
- Mix warm water and mild dish soap.
- Gently rub the mixture into the piece.
- Rinse the piece in cool water.
- Buff with a cloth to dry.
For tougher dirt, Jacqueline’s Fine Jewelry stands by this recipe: Mix three parts baking soda to one-part water. Clean the jewelry with the paste using a lint-free cloth, rinse and buff it to dry.
How To Clean Gold.
- Clean with warm water and mild dish soap, just like silver.
- If you need more help, add a few drops of ammonia to the water.
- Place your gold jewelry in the water and gently clean it with a soft bristle toothbrush. Rinse with warm water, let the gold pieces dry on their own.
How To Clean Diamonds.
First, Jacqueline’s Fine Jewelry suggests soaking your diamond jewelry in a mixture of water and mild dish soap. If soaking does not get the dirt out of the crevices, use a soft toothbrush to gently clean the diamond. If your diamond jewelry uses a tension setting or is an antique, don’t scrub too aggressively with the toothbrush. When finished, rinse the diamond with warm water and dry with a lint-free cloth.
For other hard gems, the mixture of warm water, dish soap and a soft toothbrush will work as well. The baking soda mixture and the ammonia application to clean metals will also work on gemstones as well. You can also wipe them with glass cleaner.
Be cautious with stones like turquoise. Jacqueline’s Fine Jewelry warns that submerging the pieces in water can discolor the gemstones. These stones are porous and water can easily enter.
